The HOP is equipped with a basic set of sensors that is expected to be used in any research mission flown. There is room inside the HOP for three instruments and computers racks (two in the aft cabin and one in the front cabin). A "universal" pod (including power and data lines) was also developed to be attached under the helicopter belly and used for various types of applications. A lidar has been recently mounted in such a pod (Eichinger et al 2008) and, under NCAR TIIMES leadership, we are in the process of designing another pod that will host a PTR-MS, as part of an atmospheric chemistry observation package.
